What have you been doing for the last 60 years?:
It seems like just a few years ago that we were standing in the heat outside the old Weymouth High School hoping that the maroon gowns we were wearing wouldn't stain what we were wearing underneath. So much has happened since then. Unable to attend college as I had hoped, I worked at John Hancock for a few years until I got married in 1962. 6 children followed in rapid succession and I didn't have time to breathe until the youngest started school. I had been active in PTA and being a brownie/girl scout leader and was looking for something more rewarding. I got my Real Estate Brokers license in 1977 and worked right here in Weymouth for a local company then became manager for a large national franchise in 1986 opening an office, also in Weymouth. In the meantime, while raising my children, I also pursued my dream of a college education that took me from Northeaster University, Stonehill College and even Harvard continuing ed. While I never graduated with a formal degree, the education gave me the confidence to branch ou 15 years ago and start my own appraisal business. The kids have grown up and married and I now have 11 granchildren. I got divorced. I became active with Habitat for Humanity and volunteed a number of years helping to build houses across the So Shore. As a result, I was invited to join Weymouth Rotary where I am very active and I am currently the Vice Preisdent and will be President in 2 years. I had already done some traveling but, as a Rotarian, I have done my most rewarding travel including 2 trips to Guatemala to volunteer with a Literacy program for the indigenous families who work the dump to earn a living, and to India where I assisted with the Polio inoculation program and also a hearing program. I have seen and been to many of the places shown in Slumdog Millionaire. While in India, I also visited the Taj Mahal and attended a 4 day Hindu wedding in Mumbai where we actually danced in the streets behind a horse drawn silver chariot carrying the groom. I have come along way since the insecure girl I was 50 years ago. It has been heartening to read some of the profiles sent by classmates who also have gone on to succed in life. In high school, it always seemed like everyone else was so secure and happy. Many were, I am sure, but for some of us, it took a few years to find ouselves. I only feel bad that I didn't get to know many of you way back then. See you in July. |

What have you been doing for the last 60 years?: After a 40 year career in the New England utility industry, I retired with my lovely wife, Linda, to Cape Cod. Now every day is Saturday! Spend a lot of time hiking, cycling, kayaking, traveling and attending classes at the local college - all the things that got short shrift during the working years. |

If after 50 years your still above ground CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! We have lived in interesting times: three wars, three assassinations, man on the moon, our president elected by the Supreme Court, 9/11 tradgedy, drugs, sex and rock n' roll (that wasn't all that bad), Watergate and economic swings in our economy, just to name a few. Who knew that in the innocent and halcyon days of 1960 we would be challenged so frequently. But, we endured and for that lets all take a BIG BOW!!! If you yearn for those good old days it might have something to do with the cost of living back in 1960. Here's a few: *New House---$12,675 (no sub-prime loans) *New Car---$2,610 ( no sudden acceleration!!!) *Average Income---$5,200 ($100/ week) *Average Rent---$98 per month *Tuition at Harvard---$1,250 (Hardly covers the cost of books today) *Movie Ticket--$1.00 (The Apartment won the Academy Award for best picture) *Gasoline---25cents a gallon (and everyone in the car chipped in!!!) *US Postage stamp 4cents each (had to lick them though) Top songs (how many do you remember?) included : *The Twist---by Chubby Checker ( song that liberated the dance floor, especially for men) *Save The Last Dance for Me ---The Drifters *Stay---Maurice Williams & The Zodiacs *Stuck on You---Elvis Presley *Teen Angel--Mark Dinning (my brother sang this song in an Irish Pub and had the crowd in tears mainly because they all had lots and lots and lots of pints) *Alley-Oop---The Hollywood Argyles *Are You Lonesome Tonight?---Elvis Presley *Cathy's Clown---The Everley Brothers *El Paso---Marty Robbins (can anyone hum a few bars???) *Georgia on My Mind---Ray Charles While thumbing through the Yearbook I wondered how many career aspirations cited by our classmates were realized. With little thought, I cited Air Force but never got anywhere close to joining. Also, it is interesting to see how careers for women were focused on just a few areas. That has improved over the years, but more opportunities still need to be extended to women along with compensation levels equivalent to men. End of my comments. |

What have you been doing for the last 60 years?:
Here is a thumb nail sketch about what we have been doing for the last 50 years. Spring of 1965 was a big year for me: Graduated from College, started my business career and best of all married Liz Ward (class of '62). You may know her father who was the Minister of the Pilgrim Congregational Church in North Weymouth and a very special person. We have two fantastic children: Katherin living in Bethesda, Md. and Brian living in Philadelphia, Pa. and two precocius grand children (aren't they all?) who keep us entertained and amazed. I was fortunate to work for three growing and profitable companies that moved us around a bit. First to New Providence, NJ where I enjoyed the pace of working in New York City. That transfer, originally for 3 years, lasted for 30 years. My business responsibilities allowed me to travel to most countries in Europe, some in Latin and South America and we lived for a year in London along The Thames River. England is a very civilized place as are their pubs and we almost speak the same language. Sorry to say I became a Yankee Fan and New York Giants fan while living in NJ. Now we are retired in Williamsburg, Virginia in a lovely spot called Governor's Land which places us closer to our grand children. There is a wealth of history here to enjoy especially about the Civil War and the Revolutionary War. And, although Jamestown, Virginia claims to be the first permanent settlement in North America we all know that honor rests forever with Plymouth, Mass. Looking forward to seeing you all at the Reunion. |
